Shell is developing Lake Charles LNG with Energy Transfer Equity, L.P. and Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. (collectively, “Energy Transfer”).

Shell has been a pioneer in liquefied natural gas (LNG) for more than 50 years. In Arzew, Algeria, the first commercial LNG liquefaction plant was delivered in 1964 with Shell involvement, and we shipped the first commercial cargo from Algeria to the UK in the same year, starting today’s global trade.

We have continued to innovate and improve the technology behind LNG, and to find ways to make more LNG available where it is needed around the world. For example, we are building Prelude FLNG, the world’s largest floating LNG production facility,

LNG is rapidly playing a bigger role in the energy mix, and the market for it is expected to grow at around 5% annually. Global demand could increase from about 240 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to around 430 mtpa in 2025. For comparison, just 80,000 tonnes of LNG were shipped by two carriers in 1964, the first year of the LNG trade.

Shell is involved at every stage of the LNG value chain: finding the fields and extracting gas, liquefying gas and shipping it, then turning the LNG back into gas and distributing it to customers.

We are one of the world’s largest LNG shipping operators, managing and operating more than 40 carriers in an industry-wide fleet comprising around 400 carriers. Our trading operation buys and sells LNG to and from Shell, its partners and third parties, helping to meet customers' long-term energy needs and respond flexibly to short-term changes in demand.

Today Shell has LNG supply projects either in operation or under construction in seven countries. We also have a major interest in one regasification plant in Hazira in India, and long-term access to capacity in several others in Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Energy Transfer is a Texas-based company that began in 1995 as a small intrastate natural gas pipeline operator and is now one of the largest and most diversified investment grade master limited partnerships in the United States. Growing from roughly 200 miles of natural gas pipelines in 2002 to approximately 71,000 miles of natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs), refined products, and crude oil pipelines today, the Energy Transfer family of partnerships has developed a diversified portfolio of assets. Through strategic acquisitions, together with an already robust asset base, Energy Transfer has become a premier provider of services to producers and consumers of natural gas, NGLs, crude oil, and refined products.

Lake Charles LNG Company LLC (previously named Trunkline LNG Company, LLC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of ETE, owns the LNG import terminal and regasification facility located on the Gulf Coast near Lake Charles, Louisiana. The import terminal has approximately 9.0 Bcf of above ground LNG storage capacity and the regasification facility has a run rate send-out capacity of 1.8 bcf/day. Lake Charles LNG Export Company, LLC ("LCL"), an entity owned 60% by ETE and 40% by ETP, is developing the liquefaction project in conjunction with BG Group. The liquefaction project will consist of three LNG trains with a combined design nameplate outlet capacity of 16.2 metric tonnes per annum. Once completed, the liquefaction project will enable LCL to liquefy domestically produced natural gas and export it as LNG. By adding the new liquefaction facility and integrating with the existing Lake Charles LNG regasification/import facility, the enhanced facility will become a bi-directional facility capable of exporting and importing LNG. Trunkline Gas Company, LLC (a subsidiary of Energy Transfer) will provide pipeline transportation services to supply natural gas to the facility.
