Lake Charles LNG Partners with SOWELA Technical Community College

The large number of announced industrial expansions in Southwest Louisiana has the potential to create far-reaching economic benefits, including scores of new jobs for the region. It also presents challenges related to the resourcing and development of tomorrow’s workforce.

Lake Charles LNG and SOWELA Technical Community College today announced a partnership that will make a difference by directly investing in technical education, preparing high school students for well-paying jobs in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) and related industries. Lake Charles LNG has provided a $250,000 grant to SOWELA that will be used to purchase equipment and introduce new classes required for industry-based qualifications in Process Technology and Industrial Instrumentation.

The funding provided by Lakes Charles LNG will enable students enrolled in Lake Charles Boston Academy, a Calcasieu Parish School Board campus, to participate in SOWELA’s dual enrollment program. These students will have access to industry professionals and career coaching to encourage, inspire and support them in their pursuit of higher education and careers in the LNG and related sectors.

“We believe education is the foundation of a strong community, so a collaborative relationship with SOWELA and Calcasieu Parish School Board represents a natural fit for Lake Charles LNG,” said Jason Klein, Asset General Manager for BG Group in the U.S., which is working with Energy Transfer to develop the Lake Charles LNG Project. “We are proud of the role we play in the communities where we operate and live, and we are committed to engaging with community partners to deliver high quality educational opportunities for future generations of LNG and industrial workers.”

"We have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with SOWELA and the Calcasieu Parish School Board, and we are pleased to be able to continue to work together to enhance the quality of educational opportunities available to high school students in our community," said Jeff Brightwell, Vice President LNG Operations for Energy Transfer. "In addition to this partnership, Lake Charles LNG is implementing a Process Technology internship program next semester, which will further strengthen the qualifications of SOWELA students interested in pursuing a career in the energy industry. We are very proud of the fact that several SOWELA alumni are now employed by the company."

“The partnership between SOWELA and Lake Charles LNG will allow the College to establish technical dual enrollment programs on the high school level, thereby exposing students earlier to the skills and training they need to pursue and obtain excellent careers in the Process Technology and Instrumentation fields. This is a great example of business and industry taking an active role in the development of the future workforce of Louisiana,” stated Dr. Neil Aspinwall, Chancellor of SOWELA. “Lake Charles LNG has invested their funds to ensure that the economy of southwest Louisiana remains robust.”
