Lake Charles LNG Continues Its Support of SOWELA Technical Community College

With industrial expansions taking place in Southwest Louisiana, the need arises for a skilled workforce. Lake Charles LNG is again teaming up with SOWELA Technical Community College to empower tomorrow’s workforce with a $260,000 investment in the education and training of area high school students; bringing Lake Charles LNG’s support of SOWELA programs to more than $500,000 in a two-year period.

Lake Charles LNG forged the relationship with SOWELA in fall 2015 to prepare high school students for employment in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) and related industries. In the initial grant, Lake Charles LNG provided more than $260,000 to the SOWELA Foundation to purchase equipment and introduce new classes required for industry-based qualifications in Process Technology and Industrial Instrumentation. The funds were dedicated to assist students enrolled in SOWELA’s dual enrollment program offered through the Calcasieu Parish School Board’s Lake Charles Boston Academy (LCBA).

The goal of the dual enrollment collaboration between SOWELA and LCBA is to enable students to acquire an Industry Based Credential (IBC) in the related field of study through expanded program content, laboratory experiences, and class offerings. This initiative supports Louisiana’s Jump Start program, which is a requirement for graduation for all students on the Technical Track.

“Lake Charles LNG is pleased to build on the progress made toward equipping young people in Calcasieu Parish with the technical skills they need to succeed as adults,” said Jason Klein, Shell’s Vice President of the Lake Charles LNG Project. “Importantly, the benefits of our investment are quantifiable: more students are participating in the dual enrollment program, grade point averages have improved and there’s a greater level of interest in technical careers. This is in line with our view that an investment in education today contributes to a stronger workforce and healthier communities in the future.”

“In addition to our continued partnership with SOWELA and Calcasieu Parish Schools, we are now in our second semester of the PTEC internship program,” said Jeff Brightwell, Vice President LNG Operations for Energy Transfer.“It has been especially rewarding to see our employees mentoring our PTEC students not only through in-plant training, but offering them a real life perspective on the opportunities available to them through a career in our local industry.”

“Lake Charles LNG has again shown a strong commitment to ensure that high school students in Calcasieu Parish have access to the training programs they need to prepare themselves for the great job opportunities available in the energy industry. This type of collaborative relationship between Lake Charles LNG, SOWELA, and the Calcasieu Parish School System is a perfect example of how industry can positively impact education and enhance the educational opportunities available to dually enrolled high school students,” stated Dr. Neil Aspinwall, SOWELA Chancellor.
